Registered tax agents have access to extended deadlines, which move lodgement as late as 15 May the following year. The list below sets out the four dates that govern an individual tax return for the 2025-26 financial year.

Registration with a tax agent must occur before 31 October to access the extended deadline. Overdue returns from previous years remain lodgeable at any time.

Which individual tax returns require specialist treatment?
Six individual tax return situations require specialist treatment: rental property income, capital gains events, home-based income, family trust distributions, deceased estates, and amendments to prior-year returns. Each situation carries its own reporting obligations.
Rental and investment property
Rental income, depreciation schedules, negative gearing and deductible expenses across one or more properties.
Selling property or shares
Working out what is assessable, what exemptions apply, and how the sale affects your overall position this year.
Owning your home
What is claimable when you work from home, and what changes if part of the property is used to produce income?
Family trust distributions
Trust income, distribution statements and how they flow through to your personal return.
Managing a deceased estate
Date-of-death returns and estate returns are handled with the executor and the ATO directly.
Think a past return was wrong
We check your previous lodgements for missed deductions and offsets, and amend where there is a legitimate claim.
What does an individual tax return include?
An individual tax return includes six preparation stages. Every return follows the same six stages, regardless of the lodgement method selected.
- Income review covering salary, investment, rental, and foreign income

- Expense assessment specific to your occupation and industry

- Offset identification covering the low-income tax offset and private health rebate
