Our Accounting Services for Adelaide Tradies

All services available in person at our three Adelaide offices or entirely online. Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Book online, and we'll call you at a chosen time — no need to take time off work.

Tradie Tax Returns — from $79

Tools, vehicles, PPE, union fees, and licences were all claimed correctly in accordance with ATO guidelines. From $79 with a fixed quote before we start. Not confident in previous returns? Second Look costs nothing if we find nothing.

GST Registration and BAS Lodgement

Compulsory above $75,000 turnover. Below that, voluntary registration lets you claim GST back on tools, materials, and vehicle costs. We advise on the right decision, register you, and lodge your quarterly BAS on time.

Vehicle Logbook and Deduction Review

Logbook method versus cents per kilometre most full-time tradies leave thousands on the table using the wrong method. We review your vehicle deduction and set up a compliant logbook from day one.

Sole Trader Tax Obligations and Planning

Your business income is taxed at your personal marginal rate up to 47%. A company pays 25% on the same income. We advise on PAYG instalments, structure review, and when the switch to a company structure makes financial sense.

Superannuation for Sole Trader Tradies

Personal super contributions up to $30,000 per year are tax-deductible for sole traders — and almost nobody claims them. A $10,000 contribution at 32.5% saves $3,250 in tax while building your retirement balance.

Bookkeeping for Tradies Businesses

Employees, subcontractors, and multiple vehicles Xero-connected to your bank; invoice templates set up; payroll managed; and a monthly picture of where your money is going, so BAS time is never stressful.

I have been a sole trader electrician for six years and had no idea I could claim my personal super contributions as a tax deduction. The Kalculators reviewed my last three returns, amended two years, and I got back more than $4,000 in refunds.
Now I make super contributions every year and claim them properly

What Can Tradies Claim on Their Tax Return?

The ATO's deduction guidelines for building and construction workers set out what is claimable, but the details of what counts as immediate deduction versus depreciation, and what requires a logbook versus a receipt, are where most self-lodging tradies either miss claims or overclaim. Here is the full picture:

DeductionWhat qualifiesKey rule
Tools under $300Hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment are fully deductible in the year of purchaseImmediate, no depreciation
Tools over $300Larger equipment depreciated over the effective life at ATO ratesCannot claim full cost in one year

Vehicle cents per km88 cents per km for work travel. Simple, no logbook.Capped at 5,000km = $4,400 max
Personal protective equipmentHard hats, steel cap boots, safety glasses, high-vis vests, gloves, and hearing protectionMust be for work use only

Been doing your own returns and not claiming all of this? Our Second Look Assessment reviews up to three years of past returns at no upfront cost. If we find missed deductions, we amend. If we do not, the review costs you nothing.

How Tax Works as a Sole Trader Tradie in Australia

This is the question most tradies going ABN for the first time want answered clearly. Here is how it actually works.

Sole trader tax - the basics for tradies

As a sole trader, ALL your business income is added to any other income you have and taxed at your personal marginal tax rate. There is no separate business tax rate.

2025-26 individual tax rates (after Stage 3 tax cuts):

  • icon
    $0 to $18,200: 0% (tax-free threshold)
  • icon
    $18,201 to $45,000: 19%
  • icon
    $45,001 to $120,000: 32.5%
  • icon
    $120,001 to $180,000: 37%
  • icon
    Over $180,000: 45%
  • icon
Plus 2% Medicare Levy on income above the low-income threshold

As a sole trader, ALL your business income is added to any other income you have and taxed at your personal marginal tax rate. There is no separate business tax rate.

PAYG instalments: once your tax from sole trader income reaches a threshold, the ATO requires you to pay quarterly PAYG instalments
rather than waiting until you lodge your return. This prevents a large unexpected tax bill at year end. We calculate your quarterly instalment amounts and advise whether to vary them up or down based on your actual income for the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tradie accountant prepares your annual tax return and claims every deduction you are entitled to, including tools, vehicle, PPE, phone, union fees, super contributions, and training costs. They advise on whether you should register for GST, prepare and lodge your quarterly BAS if you are registered, help you set up a compliant vehicle logbook, advise on when to move from sole trader to company structure, and are available throughout the year before you make decisions that affect your tax position. The difference between a generalist accountant and a tradie-specialist is knowing which deductions to look for without having to ask you.
You must register for GST once your annual turnover from all sources exceeds $75,000. Below that threshold, registration is optional. Registering voluntarily when your income is below $75,000 allows you to claim GST back on tools, materials, and vehicle costs, but it also requires you to add GST to your invoices and lodge quarterly BAS. Whether voluntary registration makes financial sense depends on your income level and the proportion of your purchases that include GST. We assess this for every new tradie client.
BAS preparation and lodgement for a sole trader tradie typically costs between $150 and $350 per quarter, depending on transaction volume and whether the bookkeeping records are up to date. At The Kalculators, we provide a fixed quote before starting, so you know the cost before committing. For tradies who keep simple records and have a straightforward income and expense pattern, BAS is generally at the lower end of that range. We can also set up your bookkeeping to make future BAS preparation faster and cheaper.
For most tradies earning under $100,000 net profit, a sole trader is simpler and cheaper to run. As net profit approaches $100,000, a company paying 25% tax versus a sole trader paying 32.5% to 37% marginal rate means the tax saving from the company structure becomes significant. The right time to switch depends on your net income level, whether you have asset protection concerns, whether you plan to employ staff, and your long-term plans for the business. We provide a written recommendation based on your specific numbers at no charge as part of a first consultation.
The simplest approach for a sole trader tradie is a separate business bank account for all income and expenses, a vehicle logbook app on your phone (there are several free ones), and a folder or phone photos of all work-related receipts. You do not need accounting software to have a clean tax return. If you are GST-registered, a basic Xero or MYOB account makes BAS preparation significantly faster and is worth the monthly subscription cost. The most important records to keep are your vehicle logbook, tool receipts over $300, and any receipts for items you are unsure about.
Yes. As a sole trader, you can make personal contributions to your super fund and claim them as a tax deduction up to the concessional contribution cap of $30,000 per year for 2025-26. To make the deduction, you must lodge a Notice of Intent to Claim a Deduction with your super fund before you lodge your tax return. This is one of the most commonly missed deductions for self-employed tradies. See the ATO's super deduction guidance for sole traders for the rules and process.
