R&D Tax Incentive Adelaide | Claim Research & Development Tax Offset
Our R&D tax incentive consultants in Adelaide help you identify eligible activities, prepare a compliant application, and claim every dollar you are entitled to.

Most Adelaide Businesses Doing R&D Are Not Claiming What They Are Owed
The Australian Government's R&D Tax Incentive is one of the most generous business support programmes in the country. Eligible companies can claim a 43.5% refundable tax offset on their R&D expenditure, meaning real cash back, not just a reduction in tax payable. For companies with a turnover above $20 million, a 38.5% non-refundable offset applies.
The problem is that most business owners either do not know they qualify, underestimate the range of activities that count as eligible R&D, or struggle to navigate the AusIndustry registration process and ATO schedule requirements without professional support.
Getting it wrong costs you in two directions. Claim too little and you leave significant money on the table. Claim incorrectly, and you risk ATO scrutiny, amended assessments, and penalties. The R&D Tax Incentive is designed to be used, but it needs to be done properly.
At The Kalculators, our R&D tax incentive team in Adelaide works with small and medium businesses across South Australia to identify eligible activities, quantify expenditure, prepare compliant AusIndustry registrations, and integrate the R&D tax offset correctly into your annual company tax return. We have the accounting and tax expertise to get this right, and we make the process straightforward from start to finish.

What Our Clients Say (Real Adelaide Stories)
Why Adelaide Borrowers Choose The Kalculators as Their Mortgage Broker
The R&D Tax Incentive (RDTI) is a Federal Government programme administered jointly by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and AusIndustry (business.gov.au). It provides a tax offset to eligible companies that spend money on qualifying research and development activities in Australia.
The incentive operates as a tax offset — not a grant. It is applied against your company's tax liability. For companies with an aggregated turnover below $20 million, the 43.5% offset is refundable, meaning if your tax liability is less than the offset amount, the difference is paid to you as a cash refund. For companies above the $20 million threshold, the 38.5% offset is non-refundable but can reduce your tax bill significantly.
To participate, your company must register eligible R&D activities with AusIndustry each year via the AusIndustry portal within ten months of the end of your income year. You then claim the offset in your company tax return via a Research and Development Tax Incentive Schedule. Both steps must be completed correctly and in sequence.

What Activities Qualify for the R&D Tax Incentive?
This is the question most Adelaide business owners get wrong. Eligible R&D activities are broader than most people assume — but they also have specific requirements that must be met. The full eligibility criteria are published on the ATO website and the AusIndustry programme page. Understanding the distinction between core and supporting R&D activities is critical to building a legitimate, defensible claim.
Core R&D Activities
Core R&D activities are experimental activities whose outcome cannot be known in advance and which are conducted for the purpose of generating new knowledge. The key test is genuine uncertainty — you are trying to work something out, not just implementing an established solution. Examples include:
- Developing a new product, process, or material where the technical feasibility is genuinely uncertain
![icon]()
- Creating new software functionality where the technical approach is not known in advance
![icon]()
- Conducting systematic experiments to test hypotheses about manufacturing, production, or performance
![icon]()
- Trialling new formulations, materials, or designs where results cannot be predicted

Supporting R&D Activities
Supporting activities are activities directly related to core R&D activities. They are only eligible when they are carried out for the dominant purpose of supporting the core experimental work. Examples include:
- Data collection and analysis directly feed into R&D experiments
![icon]()
- Production of prototypes or pilot plants used in R&D testing
![icon]()
- Quality control and testing directly supporting R&D activities
![icon]()
- Staff time spent planning and coordinating eligible R&D projects
![icon]()
What does NOT qualify: routine quality control, minor modifications to existing products, market research, sales and marketing activities, and activities undertaken after technical feasibility has been established. We assess your activities against these criteria before you commit to a claim.
