Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Business Activity Statement (BAS)?

Depending on the size of your business, a business activity statement (BAS) is a mandatory lodgment form, that is required to be filled either once, every month, or quarterly. This helps the ATO to work out your GST bill and refunds.

If an organization is in the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) system, the BAS is also used for business income tax, fringe benefits tax (FBT), fuel tax credits or wine equalization tax (if applicable). For any nil activity statements, please ensure you lodge it effectively before the due date, to avoid any ATO penalties.

Do I need to lodge and pay my BAS?

Yes, if you are a GST registered business, you are required to lodge your BAS. Moreover, if you’re a rideshare driver (Ola, Uber, or Didi), you are also required to lodge your BAS. Most importantly, based on your annual turnover, you are either required to lodge your BAS monthly, quarterly, or yearly.

How do I lodge my BAS?

You can lodge your BAS online, via mail, or phone (if nil activity). However, lodging your BAS online is the most quick and efficient way for your lodgment.

To lodge your BAS online, you can either:

  • If you are a sole trader, you can lodge it via myGov account.
  • Lodge your BAS, via an accounting software such as Xero, or QuickBooks.
  • Hire a BAS agent or an accountant to help you keep up to date with your lodgments.

What if, I miss my BAS due date?

Missing your BAS deadlines, may cause you to pay a huge penalty by the ATO, unless you have a valid reason to do. It is always recommended to hire an accountant or a certified BAS agent to help you keep your lodgments up to date.

I am a sole trader, with my annual turnover of less than $75,000. Do I still need to lodge my BAS?

Yes, absolutely. However, if you have a turnover of less than $75,000 or $150, 000 as non-profits. You are required to lodge your BAS annually with your income tax return.

What are the key due dates for BAS lodgments?

The following are the key 2022 due dates for your BAS lodgements, based on your annual turnover.

  • For organisations with $20 million annual turnovers, you are required to lodge your BAS monthly. And must submit a BAS within 21 days of every month closing.
  • For organisations, or individuals with a less than $20 million turnover. You are required to lodge your BAS quarterly, the following ATO due dates are applicable for you:
January, February and March 28 April
April, May and June 28 July
October, November and December 28 February
July, August and September 28 October
  • For organisations, with a turnover of less than $75,000, you are required to submit your BAS annually, which can be done with your yearly tax return.

Can I lodge my BAS, if I have a nil activity statement?

Yes, you can! On your activity report, you can lodge your BAS as “Prepare as Nil’ by the following:

  • Electronic lodgment via an accounting software
  • You can also contact ATO on 13 28 61 or login to your My.Gov account
  • Hire a BAS agent or an accountant to help you with your lodgments.

How long does it take, for a BAS refund?

For all electronic lodgments, it may take 2 weeks for your refund to be processed by the ATO. Considering, you have lodged a paper-based statement, it may take usually up to 10 weeks.

Please note, your BAS refunds may depend upon the debts you owe to the government such as Services Australia.

I am not happy with my BAS refund?

Depending on your business, you may have various tax obligations. If you are owed money by the ATO, you will be entitled to a refund. However, you may receive a no refund or a reduced refund based on an outstanding debt, you may have with the following:

  • If you have an income tax debt, the ATO may offset your BAS refund against the debt you owe.
  • If you have a debt outstanding with other government department such as Services Australia.
  • For any debts, that have been previously put on hold.
