In April 2016, Kaleem Ullah and Madeeha Usman opened The Kalculators from a small office in Adelaide. Both were recent migrants to Australia. Both had accounting qualifications and years of professional experience behind them, and neither had been able to break into the local industry on their credentials alone. So they built the practice they had wanted to work for.
Ten years on, The Kalculators processes over 20,000 tax returns annually. The team has grown from two people in a shared office to more than 20 registered tax consultants across three Adelaide branches at Salisbury, Blair Athol and Morphett Vale, plus an online service for clients in Murray Bridge, Woodville, Melrose Park, Port Augusta, Prospect and Brighton.
The firm has been recognised as IPA Practice of the Year (SA and NT) in 2025, IPA Member of the Year (SA/NT) in both 2019 and 2025, and has picked up four AusMumpreneur Awards for Business Excellence and Customer Service. In 2021, the firm was recognised for Diversity Inclusion after employing more than 100 young people from culturally diverse backgrounds, many of them recent migrants like Kaleem and Madeeha, who had arrived ten years earlier.

We believe accountants should tell clients things they do not want to hear. If a proposed structure will not save you tax, we say so. If a deduction you are hoping to claim will not survive an ATO review, we say so before it goes on the return. Short-term client comfort is not worth a long-term compliance problem.
We believe the tax profession has to look like Australia. Our team includes accountants from a dozen cultural backgrounds, and more than half of the people we have hired came to us through the Kalculators graduate program, which we started specifically to give young migrant accountants a first professional job. Diversity is not a marketing statement for us. It is the reason the firm exists.

Kaleem Ullah

Kaleem founded The Kalculators in 2016 after several years working in Adelaide accounting practices. Known to his clients as "Kal", he leads the firm's business advisory and complex tax matters. He was awarded IPA Member of the Year for SA and NT in 2019 and again in 2025, and led the firm to IPA Practice of the Year in 2025.
Kaleem holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in accounting, is a member of the Institute of Public Accountants, and is registered as a Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board. He speaks English and Urdu.
Madeeha Usman

Madeeha co-founded The Kalculators with Kaleem in 2016. She named the firm and now leads people, culture, and the graduate program that has brought more than 100 young accountants from culturally diverse backgrounds into their first Australian professional roles.
Madeeha received four AusMumpreneur Awards in 2020 for Business Excellence and Customer Service. She holds accounting qualifications and speaks English, Urdu and Hindi.
OUR JOURNEY
The Kalculators started in 2016 as a single Adelaide office with two accountants and a name borrowed from a nickname. Ten years on, three offices and a team of over twenty registered consultants lodge more than 20,000 returns a year.

COMMUNITY AND DIVERSITY
The Kalculators is Adelaide's largest employer of young migrant accountants. Since 2016, we have helped more than 100 graduates from diverse cultural backgrounds secure their first Australian professional role through the Kalculators graduate program. Many of them came to Australia holding accounting qualifications from India, Pakistan, Nepal, the Philippines, and China, and struggled to find employers willing to give them a first local reference. We are that first reference.
The graduate program is not a marketing exercise. Every graduate works on real client files under supervision, receives paid Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks certifications, and completes structured training in Australian tax and superannuation law. More than 60 per cent of our current team came through the program, including several who now lead client relationships and mentor the next intake.
The firm also does pro-bono work with community organisations, small charities, and NDIS-registered service providers. Where a not-for-profit needs an accountant but cannot pay commercial fees, we help. Where a small business owner is behind on returns and cannot afford to catch up in one go, we set up a payment plan that works. That is what accessible professional services actually look like in practice.
In 2021, The Kalculators was formally recognised for Diversity and Inclusion. It is the recognition we are most proud of because it reflects who the firm is rather than what it sells.
