FBT Is One of the Most Misunderstood Employer Tax Obligations in Australia

Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) is a tax paid by employers on certain non-cash benefits provided to employees in connection with their employment. It is separate from income tax. It is paid by the employer, not the employee. And it runs on a different financial year, 1 April to 31 March, with an annual FBT return due by 21 May. See how FBT works on the ATO website.

FBT creates obligations in both directions. Provide fringe benefits without registering and lodging an FBT return, and the ATO will eventually identify the discrepancy through data matching and payroll reporting. Overclaim exemptions or misclassify entertainment expenses, and you create an underpayment liability with interest and penalties.

At The Kalculators, our Adelaide FBT team advises employers on every aspect of fringe benefits tax from initial registration through to annual return lodgement, salary packaging administration, car benefit calculations, entertainment expense treatment, and the electric vehicle FBT exemption. We do this as part of your complete employer tax obligations alongside your business tax return, payroll, and BAS lodgement.

What Is Fringe Benefits Tax in Australia?

Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) is a tax imposed on employers when they provide certain non-cash benefits to employees or their associates as part of an employment arrangement. Common examples include company cars, entertainment expenses, low-interest loans, gym memberships, and reimbursement of personal expenses. FBT was introduced in Australia on 1 July 1986 to ensure these benefits are taxed consistently alongside normal salary and wages. For the official framework and guidance, see the ATO FBT hub.

The current FBT rate is 47%, and the tax is calculated on the grossed-up taxable value of the fringe benefits provided. Unlike the standard Australian financial year, the FBT year runs from 1 April to 31 March each year. Employers may also need to keep detailed records, apply valuation methods correctly, and lodge annual FBT returns to remain compliant with ATO requirements.

5.0

We had been providing cars and salary packaging to our team for years without registering for FBT. The Kalculators identified the liability, organised a voluntary disclosure with the ATO, and set up a proper FBT process going forward. The penalties were significantly reduced and we now lodge every year without stress.

What Are the Most Common Types of Fringe Benefits in Australia?

Understanding which benefits are subject to FBT, which are exempt, and how each is valued is essential for every employer. Misclassifying a single benefit type can result in overpaying FBT or triggering an ATO audit.

  • icon
Car Benefits Employer-provided vehicles available for private use may attract FBT.
  • icon
Expense Payment Benefits FBT may apply when employers pay private expenses such as school fees, gym memberships, or private health insurance premiums for employees.
  • icon
Housing Benefits Providing accommodation to employees at reduced rent or free of charge may create FBT obligations, especially in remote work arrangements.
  • icon
Loan Benefits Low-interest or interest-free employee loans may attract FBT based on the difference between the statutory and charged interest rates.
  • icon
Living Away From Home Allowances LAFHA payments for employees living away from home for work are subject to specific FBT rules and documentation requirements.
  • icon
Minor Benefits Exemption Irregular benefits under $300 may qualify for exemption from FBT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fringe Benefits Tax is a tax paid by employers on non-cash benefits provided to employees in connection with their employment. The current FBT rate is 47%. The FBT year runs from 1 April to 31 March. Employers with an FBT liability must register and lodge an annual return by 21 May each year. FBT is paid by the employer, not the employee. See the ATO FBT hub for the complete framework.
The FBT rate is 47%, equivalent to the top marginal income tax rate plus the Medicare Levy. FBT is calculated on the grossed-up taxable value of the benefit. The Type 1 gross-up rate (for benefits with GST credits) is 2.0802. A $10,000 car benefit (Type 1) has a grossed-up value of $20,802, and FBT payable of $9,777. Employee contributions reduce the taxable value and can significantly reduce FBT.
The employer pays FBT, not the employee. When an employer provides a fringe benefit to an employee, the employer bears the FBT cost. However, the employee may be indirectly affected through reportable fringe benefit amounts that appear on their income statement and affect means-testing calculations for various government programmes.
For income tax purposes, most fringe benefits do not increase an employee's taxable income. However, when the total grossed-up taxable value of benefits exceeds $2,000 in an FBT year, the employer reports a reportable fringe benefits amount on the employee's income statement. This amount is used in means-testing calculations for the Medicare Levy Surcharge, the private health insurance rebate, HELP repayments, and Centrelink assessments.
From 1 July 2022, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles below the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles ($91,387 for 2025-26) are exempt from FBT when provided as car fringe benefits. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were exempt until 1 April 2025 and are no longer exempt under the new arrangements. See the ATO electric cars FBT exemption for the full eligibility conditions.
Legitimate FBT reduction strategies include: providing exempt benefits only such as portable electronics, tools of trade, protective clothing, and eligible EVs; applying the minor benefits exemption where benefits are less than $300 grossed-up and provided irregularly; requiring employee contributions to reduce the taxable value; using the operating cost method for car benefits where the vehicle is predominantly used for work; and for NFP employers, maximising the PBI exemption or rebate within the relevant caps. See ATO exempt benefits for the full list.
The FBT return for each FBT year (1 April to 31 March) is due by 21 May of that year. The FBT return for the year ending 31 March 2026 is due by 21 May 2026. Tax agents who are registered to lodge FBT returns may have an extended due date under the tax agent lodgement programme.
If you provide any fringe benefits to employees, you need to register for FBT and lodge an annual return. Common benefits that trigger registration include company cars, salary packaging arrangements, and expense reimbursements for personal costs. See how to register for FBT on business.gov.au. Voluntary registration and lodgement before the ATO identifies an outstanding liability results in better outcomes than waiting.
