Accountants for Lawyers in Adelaide | Registered Agents
Accounting for barristers, sole practitioners, partners and legal practices in Adelaide. Personal services income, practice bookkeeping, BAS, payroll and business returns are handled by Registered Tax Agents. Fees quoted upfront.

Does your accountant understand how a legal practice actually earns its income?
Are you certain last year's return claimed everything a teacher is entitled to?
Legal practice does not fit the standard small business template. A barrister invoices for their own skill, which puts the personal services income rules in play from day one. A partner is taxed on a share of the practice's profit that they may not have received yet. An incorporated practice runs a statutory trust account that sits entirely outside its own books. Most lawyers come to us after an accountant treated one of those three as ordinary business income, and the result did not hold. Each of those mistakes shapes years of returns, not one.
The Kalculators works with legal practices from three physical offices across metropolitan Adelaide. Blair Athol covers the inner north, Salisbury the northern suburbs, and Morphett Vale the south. We handle the parts of legal practice that generic accounting misses: testing whether the personal services income rules apply to a barrister or sole practitioner before the structure is set, keeping the practice's business accounts clean and separate from the statutory trust account, and getting super into funds inside the seven business day window that started on 1 July 2026. For sole practitioners, partnerships, or incorporated legal practices, we prepare the practice return and the principal's personal return together. Fees are quoted before work begins.
What Accounting Services Do We Offer Lawyers?
Our legal practice services are delivered from our Adelaide offices and available in person at Blair Athol, Salisbury or Morphett Vale. Every engagement is overseen by a registered tax agent.
Barristers & Sole Practitioners
Income earned mainly from your own skill sits squarely inside the personal services income rules. We test your position against the results test and the other personal services business tests before the structure is set, not after the assessment arrives.
Law Firm Partners
Partners are taxed on their share of practice profit, which rarely matches what has actually been drawn. We reconcile distributions against drawings, plan for the gap, and prepare the partnership return and your personal return together.
Incorporated Legal Practices
Company returns, director remuneration and the interaction between practice profit and personal income. We keep the company's position and the principals' positions consistent rather than preparing them as separate exercises.
Employed Solicitors
Individual returns for solicitors on a salary, including practising certificate renewal, professional body memberships and continuing professional development. Straightforward work, done properly, starting from $79.
Practice Bookkeeping & BAS
Monthly or quarterly bookkeeping and BAS built on reconciled practice accounts. We keep the business accounts entirely separate from trust money, as required by legislation.
Payroll & Payday Super
Single Touch Payroll for practice staff, and the Payday Super process that started on 1 July 2026. Super must reach employee funds within seven business days of each pay run.

What Can Teachers Claim on Tax in Australia?
Teachers claim work expenses they paid themselves, that relate directly to earning their income, and that they hold a record for. Three ATO rules decide how much of it survives the return.
Claim more than $300 in total work expenses and you need written evidence for all of it, not just the amount above $300. Teaching aids, books and equipment costing $300 or less are deducted in full that year, while anything above that declines in value over its effective life. Car travel runs at 88 cents per kilometre for 2025-26 and 91 cents for 2026-27, capped at 5,000 kilometres.
From the 2026-27 return, a $1,000 standard deduction becomes available without receipts. Teachers whose genuine claims sit under $1,000 are better off taking it. Sources: ATO and LI 2026/19, checked 11 September 2026.

Teacher Tax Deductions We Check on Every Return
Six claims decide most teacher returns, and each carries a condition the generic checklists leave out. Every one is tested by the same registered tax agents in the same appointment.

Excursions, Camps and Sports Trips
Costs you incur taking students on excursions, camps and educational or sporting trips are deductible where the trip has an educational benefit tied to the curriculum. Transporting students to a sporting venue counts as work travel, too, and most teachers never claim it.

Professional Development
A course is deductible if it maintains or improves the skills your current teaching role requires, or is likely to increase your income from that role. A qualification that moves you into a different job is not, and repayments on your study loan never are.

Teaching Aids, Books and Equipment
Classroom supplies, resources, and professional books are deductible if you paid for them and the school did not reimburse you. If each is under $300, you claim the full cost for that year. Over $300, it declines in value over its effective life.

Travel Between Schools
Private travel to your regular school is never deductible. Between two schools on the same day is claimable, and so is carrying bulky equipment where the school has no secure storage. Salary sacrificed cars cannot claim running costs.

Working From Home and Marking
Additional running costs for marking and planning at home are deductible, including electricity, phone, and internet, as well as the decline in value of your own equipment. Rent, mortgage interest and household items are not.

What Teachers Cannot Claim
Gifts you buy for students are private and not deductible. Neither is conventional clothing, even where the school requires it. A first aid course is only claimable if you are the designated first aid person for your site.
