Farming Income Is Not Like Other Income

A good season followed by a drought. A bumper harvest that lands two years of income in one. Livestock are sold under duress because there is no feed. Farming income arrives in a pattern almost no other business has to manage, and a generalist accountant who treats it like a shopfront will cost you money.

As agriculture accountants, we work with the concessions the ATO built specifically for primary producers. Income averaging that stops a good year from being taxed as if every year were that good. Farm Management Deposits that shift income from strong years to lean ones. Instant write-offs for fencing, water, and fodder storage that no other industry receives.

If you run a farm as a business, these are not optional extras. They are the difference between a tax bill that reflects a volatile industry and one that punishes you for a single good season.

What Our Farm Tax Service Covers

A cropping operation, a grazing enterprise, a mixed farm, and a vineyard face different rules, and the structure holding them, sole trader, partnership, trust, or company, changes what applies again. We work across all of them for South Australian producers.

Farm Tax Returns

Preparation and lodgement for primary production businesses, whatever the structure. Sole trader, partnership, trust, or company. We calculate the concessions rather than leaving them on the table.

Income Averaging

Averaging spreads your tax across up to five years, so a strong season is not taxed as if it were the new normal. It applies automatically as an offset when it helps you. We make sure it is applied correctly, and advise before you opt out, because that choice is permanent.

Farm Management Deposits

FMDs let an individual primary producer deposit income in a good year, deduct it, and draw it down in a lean one. Up to $800,000 per person. Used well, they are the single most effective cash flow and tax tool in agriculture, and we manage the timing.

Primary Producer Write-Offs

Fencing is 100% deductible in the year you incur it, with no cost cap. Water facilities for over three years. Fodder storage immediately. These are concessions no other industry gets, and they are easy to under-claim if nobody is looking for them.

Livestock and Trading Stock

Livestock is a trading stock with its own valuation rules. Profit from a forced disposal, drought, fire, or disease can be spread over five years or deferred. We handle the elections that go with it.

BAS, GST and Fuel Tax Credits

Quarterly BAS, GST, and fuel tax credits for diesel used off-road in the business. Fuel tax credits alone are frequently underclaimed and add up quickly across a season of machinery use.

4.6

We had separate accountants and financial planners for years, and they never coordinated. When we moved everything to The Kalculators, the first thing they did was find a salary-sacrifice opportunity our previous accountant had never mentioned. The annual tax saving more than covers the advice fee.

The Structure Under Your Farm Matters

How your farm is held changes which concessions you can use. It is worth getting right, and worth reviewing as the farm grows or the next generation comes in.

Farm Management Deposits are the clearest example. Only an individual can hold one, so a farm run entirely through a company locks itself out of one of the best tax tools in the industry. A partnership of individuals, or a trust distributing to individuals, keeps that door open. Fencing and fodder storage deductions are also not available to a partnership as an entity, they flow to each partner on their share.

Succession is the other pressure point. Moving a farm from one generation to the next, or changing structure as it grows, has capital gains and stamp duty consequences that are far cheaper to plan than to fix. Primary producers also have access to a concession allowing a change of structure without triggering CGT in some cases. We plan these moves before they happen.

Averaging, FMDs, and Accelerated Write-Offs

Income averaging

Farming income swings. Averaging evens out the tax by comparing your current year income to your average over up to five years, then applying an offset or a bit of extra tax so you are not punished for a good season landing all at once. It applies automatically when it benefits you. You can opt out permanently, but that decision cannot be reversed, so it is worth advice before you make it.

    individual-abn-registration-adelaide-table-ctasection-image-2
    Farm Management Deposits

An FMD lets you deposit income from a strong year into an approved account, claim the deduction that year, and withdraw it in a weaker year when it is taxed instead. Up to $800,000 per individual. Only individuals can hold them, not companies or trusts, which matters for how your farm is structured. Funds generally need to stay put for 12 months to keep the deduction, though drought withdrawals can be exempt.

      individual-abn-registration-adelaide-table-ctasection-image-2
      Accelerated write-offs

Primary producers get deductions the rest of the economy does not. Fencing, 100% immediate, no cap. Water facilities such as dams, tanks, bores, and pumps, over three years. Fodder storage such as silos, immediate. Landcare operations, immediate. These sit outside the ordinary depreciation rules and are among the most under-claimed deductions in agriculture, because a generalist does not go looking for them.

How We Work With Your Farm

Every farm is different, so our process starts with understanding your operation, structure, and seasonal challenges. From planning through to lodgement, we help you make informed decisions, maximise concessions, and stay compliant all year round.

        01

        Understand the Operation

What you produce, how the farm is structured, where the income swings, and what capex is coming. Agriculture rewards planning far more than it rewards a good preparer in October.

        02

        Check the Structure

Whether your current structure lets you use FMDs and producer concessions, or quietly locks you out of them.

        03

        Plan the Year

Averaging, FMD timing, and capex are mapped against your expected season, so decisions are made with the tax position in view rather than discovered afterwards.

        04

        Reconcile and Prepare

Accounts reconciled, livestock and trading stock valued, fuel tax credits captured, and concessions applied.

        05

        Lodge

Prepared and lodged as your Registered Tax Agent, inside your program deadline.

        06

Stay in Touch Through the Season

A drought, a forced sale, or an unexpectedly strong harvest changes the plan. We would rather hear about it in March than at lodgement.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Someone carrying on a business of primary production, such as cultivating land, keeping livestock, or commercial fishing or forestry. It must be a business, not a hobby. Hobby farming does not qualify for the income tax concessions, and whether an operation is a business is judged on scale, commerciality, and intent.
A concession that evens out taxes across up to five years, so a strong season is not taxed as though every year were that good. It compares your current year's income to your average and applies an offset or a small amount of extra tax accordingly. It applies automatically when it benefits you, and you can opt out, though opting out is permanent.
An FMD lets an individual primary producer deposit income in a good year, claim a deduction for it that year, and withdraw it in a leaner year when it is taxed instead. The maximum held is $800,000 per individual. Only individuals can hold FMDs, not companies or trusts, and funds generally need to be held 12 months to keep the deduction.
Yes. Primary producers can claim an immediate 100% deduction for capital spent on fencing, with no cost cap, in the year it is incurred. This is far more generous than the standard depreciation rules. Water facilities are deductible over three years and fodder storage assets immediately.
Some do and some do not at the entity level. Fencing and fodder storage deductions are not available to a partnership itself. Instead, each partner claims their share. FMDs can only be held by individuals, so a partnership of individuals preserves access while a company does not. This is exactly why structure matters.
Profit from a forced disposal of livestock, due to drought, fire, or disease, can be spread over five years or used to reduce the cost of replacement stock, rather than taxed all in the year of sale. There are elections involved and we handle them.
If you use diesel or other fuels in your primary production business, including off-road machinery, you can generally claim fuel tax credits through your BAS. These are widely under-claimed and add up across a season of machinery, pumping, and transport.
If you run a farm as a business, the concessions available to you are specific enough that a generalist often misses them. Averaging, FMDs, and the producer write-offs are not on a standard return checklist. The value is in an accountant who works with them regularly.
Yes. We have 3 offices across metropolitan Adelaide and work with primary producers across regional South Australia online, including the Murray Bridge and Port Augusta areas. Distance is not a barrier to the service.

Farm Tax Done by People Who Know Farming

If your farm is being handled by an accountant who treats it like any other small business, you are very likely leaving concessions unclaimed. Averaging, Farm Management Deposits, and the producer write-offs are worth real money across a volatile few seasons, and they are exactly what a generalist misses.

We have worked with South Australian producers for over 10 years, from 3 offices across Adelaide and online across regional SA.
